DAVIDSON, N.C., March 13 — Long before he scored 24 points against Duke as a junior in college, even before his high school days, when he scrimmaged with future stars like Gilbert Arenas, Brendan Winters knew he wanted to make a name for himself as a basketball player.

So Winters has spent most of the last four years at Davidson College, just north of Charlotte, separating himself from the competition and from the legacy of his father, Brian Winters, a former player and coach in the N.B.A.....
