SoCon News: Former WCU player, Nick Aldridge, to transfer to Cincinnati

Aldridge chooses Cincinnati

CULLOWHEE – Former Western Carolina men’s basketball player Nick Aldridge told the Citizen-Times Thursday that he’s decided to transfer to Cincinnati.

A sophomore who led WCU with 18.8 points per game, Aldridge left the Catamounts after playing five games this season. He will be eligible to play five games into the Bearcats’ 2008-09 season. He will be classified as a junior at that point.

“I really like what coach Cronin is doing at Cincinnati,” said Aldridge, who cited personal differences with WCU coach Larry Hunter as his reason for leaving Cullowhee. “He’s playing an up-tempo style, and I think that fits me being able to play a couple of different spots. And he’s really got a young team, so I think he’s going to look for me to be a leader to some of these young guys.”

I wonder how many offers Curry gets? Seems to me that he's got a shot at going pro and if, say, Duke would take him, it would be worth transferring. Good basketball program, good school, lots of exposure. He'll be very luck to land in the first round from Davidson but he could be the sixth man at Duke and still make the first round. If he played it right, and sat out a year after getting his surgery, he could finish his BA and still leave a year early.

What in the hell are you talking about? Transferring to Duke? You are clearly joking, or very out of the loop.

I dunno about that. Transferring out and up from Davidson is a time honored ticket to success. But whatever. I'd be surprised if he hasn't considered it, more surprised if he hasn't taken it seriously, and I trust other people have talked to him about it. Doesn't mean the odds aren't, oh, likely to be 5% of him transferring. And it doesn't mean the odds aren't 95%. Athletes, even successful ones, perhaps more successful ones than not, have transfered.

At this point, he'd have to sit out a year (2008-09), and not play again until 2009-10. I'm sure it crossed his mind after his freshman year. If he didn't leave then, I doubt he'd leave now.

He's got a pretty smart father with a lot of experience advising him. Dell has a ton of contacts that can give him the scoop on what would be best for Steph's chances to get into the NBA. At this point, it's apparently best to stay at Davidson.

PS: Sorry for my tone in my initial response. That was a bit out of line on my part.
