A brief comment

The season is now over after the heart breaking 2 point loss to Kansas in the Elite Eight. I'll have plenty to post a little bit later.

For right now, however, I want to say one quick thing: I could not be prouder of Davidson College, this team and what they have accomplished this season. It has truly been a remarkable ride. To the team, I say thank you, thank you, thank you.

I encourage you all to post your thoughts in the comments section.

We are all so proud of all of you! As an 05 alumna in DC, I've loved the high fives and "go Davidson" from complete strangers this week when I wear my wildcat t-shirts... the whole nation is proud and we salute the team, coaches, students, trustees - what a great dance!

I'm a Carolina girl, but this past week I have been obsessed with Davidson. I live 15 minutes from campus and have always been enthralled with Davidson College. Thanks so much for showing the country that academics and basketball can coexist. Also, thanks for being so gracious. Every member of this team is an excellent role model for kids playing basketball in their driveways and dreaming of one day playing on the college level. Stephen Curry, Jason Richards, Lovedale, Coach McKillop, along with everyone else involved with the organization should be commended for their performance. It's still a great day to be a Wildcat even though I went to Carolina.

Davidson, you should be very proud. Hundreds of thousands of people, from London, England to New London, CT enjoyed your wonderful team. There is no better team, no better coach, no better story in the sports world.
See you next November. We're all with you forever.

McKillop and company, thank you and congratulations on a terrific season. You represent the best of sports and Davidson College. What a team for the school and the nation to rally around. This was no Cinderella run. You proved that you could compete through talent, toughness, and teamwork all season. The dance may have ended, but you all are still heroes. Thank you!

WB, thanks for such a good job on the website.

You don't get to the elite 8 by wearing glass slippers, you get there by beating good teams. As a KU fan, congrats to your team for taking us out of our game and being such a tough opponent. Curry's the real deal. Look forward to seeing what you got next year!

I was born in Indiana, raised in Colorado, and currently live in Kentucky. But Davidson is now My Team -- you won me over with the most joyful, pure basketball I've seen in ages, unsullied by ego and with nary a prima donna in sight. I too couldn't be prouder of Davidson for giving Kansas a hard fight and a demonstration of true sportsmanship.

So... who's making the "i heart steph" t-shirt?

Davidson College is amazing. This loss was heart-breaking, but at the same time, it was such a beautiful run. I could not be prouder of this team and of this community. It is amazing to see all the respect we are getting from people who have no connection to the college.

Thanks for an amazing site... please keep it up going forward.

Thanks, Wildcats, for taking us on a tremendous journey, and to the seniors, best of luck going forward.

Nothing short of complete brilliance. I just can't get over how classy and talented they are. Here's to running down the top teams in the nation and spreading the good word about Davidson far and wide!

Nice game, amazing game. Alas, I think with another night's rest the red shirts would have won.

And now?

Does Curry go pro? Will his stock ever be higher? If a team declares that he's their lottery pick, he should go, right?

And McKillop? Off to South Carolina?

Also, wassup with next year's recruits?

Amazing, brilliant and inspiring do not even begin to describe both this team and the feelings of all its devoted fans. As a Davidson grad, I am so proud of each and every one of those young men. They showcased both athletic prowess and the real Wildcat spirit throughout the NCAA tournament.

Thanks for everything guys... can't wait to graduate with JRich, with Sanders, with Boris and we'll definitely be watching next year.

And Will, you're always my first stop on my quest for news. Great job.

Wells, how awesome was that? Great fun and great job keeping us all up to date all year.

Now, who's going to be stepping up next year and how's recruiting going?

An amazing story, Davidson. Heart, talent, class.

Such a pleasure watching this run through the tourney, and so proud of the national recognition and positive press that has come as a result.

My sister went to Davidson, and she and all her friends were going nuts!!

It was very easy to fall in love with this team and with Steph, and I can't wait to watch more of the same next season!

Richards, Meno, Sander- what a ride. Congrats, and best of luck in whatever life brings you!!

My Dad went to Davidson, and has been talking about the basketball team for the last few years. This team has made me a believer!

I can't tell you how exciting and inspiring it was to watch this team bring true college basketball to the tournament. The Wildcats proved they were not a fluke, and these guys play from the heart. It's been exciting to be connected to Davidson through my Dad, and being inundated with his emails of sports stories about Davidson. I love that even though Kansas won, all the articles I have read spend 3/4 talking about Davidson!!

You guys should be proud of yourselves. Outstanding job. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Curry and the Wildcats.

I've never been prouder to be an alumna (class of '03)! These guys showed the world that EVERY day is a great day to be a Wildcat!

I graduated from Davidson in '95, and I never thought anyone would top the run that the soccer team made in '92. But these guys did. I have not been this excited about the 'Cats in over 15 years. Way to go

I am Bill's Dad(Davidson '59)and Mason's YaYa. I am sure all of the Davidson Alums join me in saluting this truly remarkable group of young men who have shown the world that it is still possible to play basketball in the old fashioned way...as TRUE student athletes. You have made all of us proud. Thank you for all of your hard work and for the wonderful show you have given all of us! Well done. I could wish Mason nothing better than that he might one day attend this really special school.

Congratulations Wildcats for a terrific job! Here in Quito, Ecuador, South America, we´ve been with you every step of the way until the Elite Eight. You were just one shot away from the Final Four! Iam sure we will watch more of the same spirit next season.

Wow! We may be heartbroken at the final outcome, but we will never forget this season. Davidson showed its heart, talent and absolute belief in itself to the sports world and they took note in a bit way. Go, Wildcats and way to go, Coach McKillip and players. You have thrilled and inspired us!

It's been a great year for college basketball. As a Davidson grad ('91) and a resident of Chapel Hill, I get plenty of respect for my schooling, but not even a nod for Davidson's athletics, until a few weeks ago. Walking around Franklin St. with my (20 year old) Davidson sweatshirt, I got lots of "Go Wildcats!" and "Congratulations!" Classy team, classy coach, makes me proud. Thanks so much! And thanks for the great blog to keep track of all of this.

To the '05 alum in DC - the last 16.8 seconds of this game nearly gave a 1975 alumna in DC a heart attack - and a huge dose of nostalgia for Johnston Gym, guys wearing "tiny" basketball shorts, . . . . I doubt there's been this much excitement on campus in the past 30 years - so I'm thrilled for today's students to experience it.

I'm sure that coach doesn't believe in moral victories, which is why we have a team of winners BUT...to have the ball, and a chance to win against an universally acknowledged great team in Kansas, and all the other great wins, NO bad loses; from a great group of true student-atheletes....All I can say is, if we are not ranked in the top 10 in the final poll, then the pollsters are smoking crack!

No one wanted the season to end this way, but with the possible exception of dropping loans from the financial-aid package, nothing has made me prouder of Alma Mater than the way this team has performed and carried itself.

Anonymous said...

Nothing short of amazing. Can't wait for next season. Thank you JRich, thank you Boris, thank you Thomas.

Lex - yes the no student loan thing was a big deal. But I was really impressed that the Board of Trustees provided transport & rooms to any student who wanted to attend the games this weekend. I haven't felt so positively about the Trustees since their mid-1970s reversal of opinion on co-education. I can even smile now thinking that alumna have become some of the school's biggest sports fans.

I put this on the DavidsonCats board as well, but it has a place here.

Here's to Jason Richards, who was the lionheart at the center of this team. Thanks to him and his teammates, my lasting memory of this season will be the feeling I had as that shot left his hand: joy, anticipation, hope.

What happened next doesn't matter.

Thanks, Jason, and the rest of you. You've reinforced what my friends used to call my overweening pride in my alma mater, but which most of them now know is richly deserved.

As a lifelong Davidson resident AND a Davidson alumnus, I have been a fan of Davidson Basketball for over 25 years. I have been proud of all of our sports teams, our students, our faculty, and our community for that long as well. The world now realizes what we've known all along -- Davidson is a wonderful place. Congratulations to the '07-08 Wildcats!

Sweet Davidson...
Good times never seemed so good.
So Proud.
So Proud.
So Proud.

The world embraces the integrity and pride so richly displayed by this school and this team. Davidson is a bright shining star in every way--many thanks to the TEAM, coaches, team parents, John Kilgo, Will Bryant and ALL the "behind-the-scenes" people (Susan Mercer) who made this incredible, fantastical, magical journey possible...you are all a "PRIDE OF WILDCATS" to me.
Looking forward to next year!

We could not be more proud of our wildcats! We had a great time at the tournament with them and we know how hard they worked to get to the Elite 8. Boys, you made the nation love Davidson and we love you!!!!!!!!!!

Will,

Good thing you didn't shut this puppy down when you got tired. When things get a little hectic in the future, don't forget to call on your Davidson teammates for an assist.

Could not be prouder of Davidson. I have had numerous family members attend Davidson. The physical education center is named after a relative of mine. I found myself rooting for Davidson as if it were my alma mater. Have great respect for Coach McKillop ever since I attended his bball camp in 98. Still remember him talking about Davidson on the cover of SI and saying "we can do that"

Anonymous said...

So, I didn't know a school named Davidson even existed before this years NCAA tournament. I don't know what it was about them, but from the first time I saw this team playing, I forgot about rooting for all my Texas teams and started rooting for them. I didn't think it was possible, but they made me love basketball so much more. I don't know much about the school or students, but their determination, courage, skills, and HEART was so evident when I watched them play. I'm sure it is an honor and joy to be associated with the school and team, thanks for allowing some of us from far yonder experience a glimpse of heaven!

I think it actually was just one trustee (!), although I might be mistaken about that.

As a '94 alum', I remember the years with Ozone Brandon Williams, Chris Alpert, Jason Zimmerman, even Detlef Musch... even then it was clear that McKillop was a great coach, taking the team postseason several times. But over the last 3 or 4 years, WOW. And this year... WOWWIE WOW WOW. What a team. What class. What spirit. I happened to be driving by Davidson during the last 5 min of the Kansas game, and went into the first place I could find w/ a TV, a sushi place off Main. The last seconds were deflating... but they were just last seconds. I left feeling closer and prouder of what Davidson is and who these young men are. Go 'Cats... Final 4, '09!!!!!
