Davidson in a league of its own By Jeff Hartsell
Thursday, January 24, 2008
In a column this week mapping out the landscape of college basketball, ESPN hoops guru Joe Lunardi relegates the Southern Conference to the hinterlands of “low-major” status.
Except, that is, for Davidson.
“There are three teams in low-major conferences with both mid-major expectations and performance,” Lunardi opines. “Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), Winthrop (Big South) and Davidson (Southern) are the only teams at this level who have competed for at-large bids on multiple occasions.”
That’s why Lunardi lists Davidson, alone among SoCon members, as “mid-major” school.
So when they say the Wildcats are in a league of their own, they aren’t kidding.
Davidson, 11-6 overall and 9-0 in the SoCon, has won seven in a row as the Wildcats hit the Lowcountry for games tonight at The Citadel and on Saturday at College of Charleston. Coach Bob McKillop’s team has won nine SoCon games by an average margin of 16.4 points, the latest an 82-67 rout of Western Carolina on Monday.
All of which begs the question — Can anyone stop Davidson from replicating its undefeated SoCon season of 2004-05, and from becoming the first team in league history to go 20-0 in conference play?
“You are asking the wrong human,” Chattanooga coach John Shulman said after his Mocs lost by 85-58 at Davidson last Saturday. “I can’t do it, and we have not been able to do it.”
Wildcats sophomore standout Stephen Curry hit 8 of 14 shots from 3-point range and scored 37 points in that game as former Davidson and Maryland coach Lefty Driesell watched from courtside.
“I’ve never seen a better 3-point shooter than him,” Driesell said afterwards.
But there is much more to Davidson than Curry, who is averaging a league-best 24.1 points.
“You have to match their physicality and their toughness,” Shulman said. “And Curry, we chased him, but we didn’t chase him out to 30 feet. He’s phenomenal, an NBA guy I think. But they are also very good in the post, and their point guard leads the nation in assists.”
Senior guard Jason Richards is averaging 8.7 assists per game, and such players as 6-8 Boris Meno, 6-8 Thomas Sander, 6-6 William Archambault and 6-6 Mas Paulhus Gosselin give the Wildcats plenty of length inside.
Elon has come closest to beating the Wildcats in league play this season, dropping a 59-57 decision at home on Jan. 9. Curry was just 4 of 15 from the field in that game, and Davidson hit just 5 of 17 from 3-point range in scoring their season-low.
“You have to guard them awfully well, and that begins with transition defense,” said Elon coach Ernie Nestor. “Their big guys run the court well, so it’s not a simple formula. And at the same time you’re defending them, you have to keep scoring because they push the tempo so well.”
Against Elon, Davidson made up for a sub-par shooting night on the boards, out-rebounding the Phoenix by 38-25. Sander had 12 points and 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.
“Sander is a very valuable player for them,” Nestor said. “He keeps the ball alive and competes physically inside. There is a toughness to him that the others pick up on, at least that’s how it looks to me.”
Davidson was unable to pull off a signature upset in early games against North Carolina, Duke, UCLA and North Carolina State. But that doesn’t mean the Wildcats can’t pull off such an upset in March.
“Everyone was down on them early when they lost to Carolina and Duke and UCLA,” Shulman said with a chuckle. “I wasn’t one of those. They are very special.”

Sad news: CofC baseball coach's 13 year-old daughter diagnosed with cancer
Say a prayer for this young lady.

MOUNT PLEASANT — John Pawlowski looked out over the baseball field at Patriots Point on Wednesday afternoon but his mind was 170 miles away.
The College of Charleston baseball coach has much more to think about these days than his pitching rotation.
Just west of here, in the small town of North Augusta, his 13-year-old daughter, Mary-Louise, is fighting the fight of her life. She was diagnosed with PNET (primitive neuroectodermal tumors), a rare malignancy seen in only two percent of children with cancer.
"The hardest thing I've ever done is tell my 13-year-old daughter she has cancer," Pawlowski said on a sunny afternoon as his players arrived for practice.

Davidson: "Team on a Mission"
Teams on a mission!

By Kyle Whelliston on January 22, 2008
I always think of BYU when folks say this, and it's one of those dumb things that sports-people like to work in, sure. Everyone's on a mission to win, some teams and players just aren't good at executing that. But there are some squads that are putting up big scores.
Like Davidson! We'll talk about the Wildcats a little later when we unroll this week's State ratings. But they're now 9-0 and in full control of the SoCon (again). Davidson's won seven in a row to go 11-6 overall (or, rather, 11-2 without the Duke, UNC, UCLA and N.C. State games included) and took its traveling roadshow to Western Carolina last night, where it thrashed the catamounts 82-67. Stephen Curry, a name you probably remember, poured in 29 points of liquidy basketball goodness and is now the nation's fifth-leading scorer at 24.1 ppg. On a mission!

Curry and Richards Lead Cats to Seventh Straight Win
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – A year after the duo accounted for 46 points and 11 3-pointers in a Davidson win, Stephen Curry and Jason Richards combined for 47 points and 10 treys in an 82-67 Southern Conference men’s basketball victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts Monday evening at the Ramsey Center.
It was Davidson’s seventh consecutive victory and 19th straight regular season league triumph as it improves to 11-6 overall and 9-0, while WCU falls to 5-12 and 1-6.
Curry scored 29 on 10-for-19 shooting and added seven rebounds, four assists and five steals, while Richards tallied 18 points on a 6-for-9 night and recorded eight assists and four boards. Bryant Barr netted nine points off the bench.
Brandon Giles led Western Carolina with 23 points, and Blake Gallagher added 12 points and eight rebounds. Jake Robinson scored 12 points off the bench.
The Wildcats struggled offensively early but used their scrappy defense to grind away until their shots started falling. And fall they did. Leading 11-10, Davidson used a 15-4 run to open a 26-14 cushion following a 3-pointer by Richards.
The ‘Cats then lit the fuse and exploded to score 16 points in the final 2:30 of the period. After Barr hit a 3-pointer from the wing, Curry got a steal and fed Max Paulhus Gosselin for an alley-oop dunk, and then the sophomore stole the inbounds pass and scored a layup as Davidson took a 36-16 lead. Richards and Curry nailed consecutive 3-pointers to finish the half, and the ‘Cats led 42-23 at the break.
The defense was once again excellent until the offense could get going. Davidson held Western Carolina (5-12, 1-6 SoCon) to 7-for-26 shooting in the first half and scored 12 points off nine turnovers.
Davidson blitzed the Catamounts in the opening minutes of the second half with a 15-4 run. Curry capped the stretch with a conventional 3-point play after he was fouled converting a layup on a fast break. That gave Davidson an insurmountable 57-27 cushion, its largest of the game, 4:37 into the frame. Western Carolina would not get closer than 15 points for the rest of the game.
Davidson is back in action in a 7:05 p.m. contest Thursday at The Citadel.
Game Notes: The Wildcats are in the midst of a three-game road trip… Davidson starts SoCon play with a 9-0 mark for the third straight season and fourth time under coach Bob McKillop… Davidson extended its regular-season conference win streak to 19 and has won by an average of 18.7 points a game during the run… The ‘Cats moved to 7-0 with Andrew Lovedale in the starting lineup… Curry scored in double figures for the 44th consecutive contest... He moved into third on Davidson's career 3-pointers chart.

Thomas Sander takes an elbow to the nose
Coach McKillop and Coach Matheny (and the rest of the bench) were about to blow a gasket when this happened. I can't say for certain, but it sure looked intentional to me. The UTC player just walked away, not looking back, as if he knew exactly what he had done. That UTC player should have been thrown out.
