The Columbus paper is doing a great job covering Davidson and this game. Maybe the Observer should take note of this?

Columbus Dispatch article about 15 seeds

No. 15 seeds aren’t always pushovers
Thursday, March 16, 2006
Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

As the tip-off for Coppin State’s 1997 first-round NCAA Tournament game against South Carolina neared, Coppin coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell looked his players in the eye. He liked what looked back at him.

"Those players, they were winners," Mitchell said. "They always had the look of winners. They refused to lose."

With that in mind, perhaps Ohio State coach Thad Matta should sneak a peek into the eyes of the Davidson players before the teams meet Friday in Dayton. Is an upset in the offing?

Davidson is feeling 'March Madness'
From Chapel Hill/Durham TV station
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson College is back in the NCAA tournament, and its students are fired up about it.

Thanks to Catsfan2004 from DavidsonCats.com for the tips on these two articles and the following two articles posted.

Charlotte Observer article about Davidson....sort of

Are you mad for March Mania?

"Two of the biggest underdogs live here in our area. Winthrop down in Rock Hill. Davidson College up in Davidson.

"Today, Winthrop plays Tennessee in Greensboro. On Friday, Davidson plays Ohio State in (gulp) Dayton, Ohio.

"If you've never filled out an NCAA bracket, first, welcome to our planet, and second, a quick lesson: Each of the four regional brackets seed teams from 1 to 16. Tennessee and Ohio State are No. 2 seeds, which means they're considered two of the top eight teams in the country.
Winthrop and Davidson are No. 15 seeds, which means they're considered two of the worst teams in the tournament."

Gee....nice. We appreciate the supportive writing by the local paper.

Coach keeps Davidson focused on the present
Last year’s flameout, 2002 loss to OSU off the team’s radar
Thursday, March 16, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A year ago, Davidson was riding high into the Southern Conference tournament.

The Wildcats had rolled through league play with a 16-0 record. The conference tournament seemed destined to be a coronation with an NCAA Tournament berth as the reward. Then North Carolina-Greensboro pulled the crown off Davidson’s head with a semifinal upset.

With seven seniors returning from that team, it would have been understandable if Davidson coach Bob McKillop used that loss as motivation for this year’s team. But he said he hasn’t.

Ohio State Teleconference

Men's Basketball Quotes From March 15th Teleconference
March 15, 2006
Ohio State Head Coach Thad Matta

On the week of preparation
"We had to take Monday off, NCAA-wise, which we needed. We played three games in three days and they were three battles. Yesterday we got back at it. We'll make some changes to get ready for Davidson, as well as continue to sharpen what we do. We'll go again today with a hard practice and we depart this afternoon. We'll practice tomorrow and get on UD's floor tomorrow afternoon then get ourselves ready to go. We'll do a lot of film work and keep our guys as fresh as we can."

On Davidson
"They're a very good basketball team. They are senior loaded, very experienced, shoot the ball very well from the perimeter and have a big guy inside in Johnson. They're a very good team and well coached. They have good spacing. They do a good job of spacing the floor and making you pay for making mistakes defensively. They're very sound defensively and they don't make a lot of mistakes defensively. They're a position-type oriented team, always seem to be in the right place at the right time and they do a good job getting back in transition. It'll be a challenge."

Wednesday of the Underdog

Here's good little article written on Will Bryan's blog....it sums up the hopes of the underdog on the Wednesday before the NCAA tournament starts. This picture (that I lifted from Will's site...hope you don't mind, Will) also gives a glimpse at the Davidson fans' enthusiasm about the NCAA tournament.

Well done, Will.

Brendan Winters article in NY Times???

Coach's Son Has Found a Haven at Davidson
By VIV BERNSTEIN
Published: March 15, 2006

DAVIDSON, N.C., March 13 — Long before he scored 24 points against Duke as a junior in college, even before his high school days, when he scrimmaged with future stars like Gilbert Arenas, Brendan Winters knew he wanted to make a name for himself as a basketball player.

So Winters has spent most of the last four years at Davidson College, just north of Charlotte, separating himself from the competition and from the legacy of his father, Brian Winters, a former player and coach in the N.B.A.....

McKillop to be featured on 1460 AM

I have been listening online to this station, and heard a promo that indicated they will "introduce" the Columbus area to Davidson and Bob McKillop today between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. I don't know if that means McKillop will be interviewed, or simply profiled by the station. Nonetheless, if you are sitting at a computer this afternoon/evening, you may want to listen in to see what they have on.
